[CH.15] Junior's Troubles and Consultations (Part 2)

Just as I returned from the fieldwork, I found three people in the back space, nodding and muttering.

"What's going on?"

"A customer sent this device to the office due to a malfunction."

Kuhou-san was preparing a cardboard box.

It seems to be an older version of Tesmo that we picked up from Company S. It had been working fine until recently when they moved it to a different location for sample analysis, and it started encountering errors and stopped.

"I'm a bit concerned. If we send it to the headquarters' Service Team, it will become a paid service. If it's genuinely malfunctioning, that's fine, but..."

It's an old model, but the manufacturing date is still relatively recent. If it's a board failure, it can be quite costly to repair. Given its age, there's a possibility it might become a warranty claim.

"In any case, we wouldn't know. Hanamura, do you understand?"

"Yeah. Let's try turning it on first."

I plugged it into the power outlet and turned it on. Checking the internal settings, I found a puzzling point.

"Ah, I see."

"Hanamura-san, do you understand?"

"Yeah, it's a well-known issue. Let's see if we can reproduce the problem."

First, I adjusted the internal settings to reproduce the issue. I incorporated a calibration sample for analyzing values into the device and started the measurement.

"Oh, an alarm just went off."

"That's it. Probably a version bug."

It's a situation where, under specific settings, the measured components and values do not align with the alarm threshold, causing an alarm. Normally, such a threshold wouldn't make sense, but somehow, it ended up being possible... and they released it to the market like that.

It turns out they had never performed an analysis with that particular setting before. They had not actively tried to backtrack because it was only used under special conditions, which is understandable.

"If we update the software version, it should probably fix the issue. Did each office receive maintenance notebooks with a PC? Do you have one?"

"I'll bring it."

Kuhou-san brought it over, so I connected the device to the notebook PC using a USB cable.

My work notebook PC has all the update files, so I transferred them to the maintenance notebook PC and initiated the update while operating the device.

"I have instructions that Senpai made, so just follow those commands, and it should be fine."

I entered the commands and started the update. It would automatically update, so all we had to do was wait.

"All right, it's done."

"Hanamura-san, you're amazing!"

I restarted the device and tested if the issue could be reproduced. The alarm no longer went off, and it was now showing a normal result.

"You're really something, Hanamura-kun."

"Hahaha, if I were still on my previous team, anyone could have done it, so it's not that big of a deal."

I received praise from Manager Mimasaka and Nishina-san and felt quite pleased. It wasn't really a big deal, but it's always nice to be praised.

"It's a relief we didn't have to send it to headquarters."

"That's right. If it had been a version problem, it would have been a retroactive fix, and we wouldn't have had to charge for it."

We just need to recalibrate it in the office and return it to the customer. It might be a good idea to have the customer keep it for a week just to make sure everything's okay.

I was planning to discuss the arrangements with Kuhou-san tomorrow when we would take the device back to the customer. However, she wasn't around.

She wasn't at her desk either. I looked around outside and couldn't find her. Eventually, I found Kuhou-san leaning against the wall, looking downcast.
